Hi, as I mentioned in my "about me" page I was raised in a musical family. Since I was a baby I've been exposed to a wonderful variety of musical styles. My dad loved ragtime/roaring 20's banjo and my mom loved singing old time country & western songs. All types of music was welcomed in our house, although when I bought my first "Black Sabbath" album I realized my parents did have there limits of acceptance. But, they didn't say no, they just encouraged me to "turn it down a little". Anyway, I thought you all would get a kick out of this photo history of my younger days. Enjoy, just don't laugh too hard.
1956, my mom, uncle Charlie, my dad & me. Ok, so it's a mickey mouse guitar. Cut me a break, I 'm just getting warmed up. Mary sang and usually played upright bass but fooled around with banjo a bit. Charlie played guitar, 5 string banjo, fiddle, and sang. George sang, played a wicked 4 string banjo, lap steel, guitar, fiddle and harmonica. Ragtime, bluegrass, country and a little blues and pop music thrown in for good measure.
1965, my first electric guitar and I wanted to be Elvis Presley.
1972, lot's of Cat Stevens/Jim Croce.
1974, back with my mom and dad, playing local shows.
1978, my first jazz guitar. Custom designed by me and built by my good friend Eric Schulte. I was studying jazz guitar with Calvin Harris at the time who was Grover Washington Jr's studio guitarist. New influences, George Benson, Dave Brubeck, Wes Montgomery, Pat martino and others.
1986 and 1987, oh look, I'm trying to be a rock star. Cool photos and lots of distortion and feedback. Van Halen, Brian May Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, all my new heroes. But what's up with that mustache?
1996, 2 years after my first CD. I'm teaching Nirvana, Offspring, RHCP, Greenday, 311, Metallica, etc. to more than 80 students a week and writing & jamming my own stuff as well. Looks like I'm pretty pleased with myself.
2008, 54 years old and I'm enjoying myself tremendously. I'm always teaching and writing and jamming and having a great time. Musical influences continue to arise and affect my playing and writing style. I like to tell people that I'm a victim of my students. Whatever song they bring in to learn, I will teach it to them. No matter how easy or how difficult, no matter how good or how bad, it's not my place to judge musical style. I't my job to make you as good a guitar player as you can be.
